THE Retired Blokes Swimming Club’s shower debating society this morning was bemoaning the demise of the traditional workingmen’s and labour clubs.
When I was a child, my parents – both lifelong Labour voters – were members of Waunarlwydd Workingmen’s Club. As traditional industries like coal mining and metal working declined, membership dwindled to the point where the club was forced to shut its doors.
Looking for somewhere else to go on a Saturday night, my parents joined a club in the neighbouring village. Nothing unusual about that, except this was the Gowerton Conservative Club.
When I teased them about this, my mother said it did not really count because half of the membership there was from Waunarlwydd, and there had never been a recorded example of anybody from our village voting for the Tories.
